What is Holiday Window Works?
Retail Alliance initiated the Holiday Window Works contest last year in an effort to get neighborhood merchants together and decorated their windows for the holidays to drive traffic and benefit Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters (CHKD).
Last year 130 local retailers decorated, in keeping with the theme, “Spirit of Giving”, for the chance to win up to $1500!
The contest is judge in two different categories, “Retail Alliance® Holiday Window Works Award” and the “People’s Choice Award.”
Last year’s “Retail Alliance® Holiday Window Works Award” winner was Return Engagements in Pheobus received $1000 plus $500 to the Pheobus Business District!
The “People’s Choice Award” went to Ray’s Florist for collected over $700 for a total collection to be donated to CHKD of $3,284.30!
This year our goal is to double that and raise over $6,000!
Television Co-op with WVEC-TV 13

Retail Alliance will also be partnering with WVEC-TV13 again this year to promote the Holiday Window Works Display Contest with a co-op television spot.
The co-op sponsorship of this campaign will enable your business to advertise on WVEC-TV13, an ABC affiliate during the holiday season. This co-op will include five (5) week television commercial schedule to air with a minimum of 12 commercials that will air in some of WVEC’s top programs including Oprah, Good Morning America, 13 News Daybreak, The View, Rachael Ray and more. Co-op participants will also be featured on wvec.com’s Holiday Window Works splash page and more!
Your business will have the opportunity to showcase not only your best window display, but this holiday season’s hottest items and gift ideas.
2008 Holiday Window Works Official Rules
This year's theme is “Holiday Magic”
The official 2008 Holiday Window Works theme is “Christmas Magic.”
HOW TO ENTER:
NO PURCHASE NECESSARY. To enter, ask your Retail Alliance® Director of Membership Development for an entry form; or visit www.retail-alliance.com to download entry form. To be eligible, entries must be completed and received on or by the closing date, November 14, 2008. Registration forms will be accepted via telephone, fax, courier or personal delivery.
CONTEST RULES:
ELIGIBILITY: The contest is open to independent retail businesses in the Greater Hampton Roads Area within a business district. There must be at least twelve (12) independent retail businesses within each business district to qualify for the “Retail Alliance Holiday® Window Works Award.” Each business, whether you have twelve (12) participants or not, will be eligible to win the “People’s Choice Award” and collect money for Children’s Hospital of King’s Daughters (CHKD).
JUDGING: Window displays will be judged on two different levels. The first judging will be the “People’s Choice Award.” Customers who visit participating locations will be encouraged to vote for their favorite window display with money (pennies, dimes, dollars, etc.) in “holiday collection boxes” located in each participating location. Boxes will be provided by Retail Alliance. The location with the most money by December 15, 2008 will win the “People’s Choice.” Money will be counted on location with business owner. All money collected will be donated to Children’s Hospital of King’s Daughters (CHKD).
The second judging will be the “Retail Alliance® Holiday Window Works Award.” A panel of pre-selected judges will determine the winner of this contest based on the following criteria on a 100 point scale; 20 points-creativity; 15 points-theme adherence; 15 points-merchandising (use of your products in the window display); 10 points-appeal (overall appearance); 10 points-use of space; 10 points-lighting; 5 points-use of color; 5 points- multi-media usage (animation, audio, etc.); and 10 points- Retail Alliance® membership. There will be one winner from each business district and one overall grand prizewinner.
PRIZE: Winners will be announced on December 19, 2008. The “People’s Choice Award” winner will receive a banner, as well as a free advertisement in the January Retail Angles (Retail Alliance® Monthly Newsletter). The “Retail Alliance® Holiday Window Works Award” winner will from each business district will receive a banner and $500. The grand prizewinner will receive an additional $1000 plus $500 to go to business district.
ADDITIONAL TERMS: There is no limit to the amount of money or time an individual business puts into their window display. The amount of money and time spent on window display will not affect judging.
