POP UP STORES ~The good and the bad
Pop-up stores have been around for years but have become more popular during the recession. They offer existing retailers a more attractive opportunity to expand their business, unload old inventory, experiment with new locations and/or concepts. Pop-up stores offer the start-up entrepreneur a less expensive way to get up and running without the psychological road block of a traditional 5 or 10-year lease in the current economy. However, what is happening in many cases, larger businesses target similar smaller businesses. The idea is to surround a smaller store for their peak earning months eventually cutting them out of existence thus dominating the market. They are called Guerrilla Pop Up stores. Many who use this tactic have taken this a step further by eventually closing their permanent stores saving the cost of permanent employee wages and benefits and only operating the Pop Up for short targeted periods of time offering minimum wage and no benefits. The question city officials need to decide is to what extent they want small permanent businesses or Pop Up stores, tail gate and tent vendors.
